The area in which Johnny Tremain lives is known as Hancock's Wharf. It is named after the Mr. Hancock who comes into Mr. Lapham's shop on p. 19. This man is THE John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. How does Johnny react to Mr. Hancock's presence? Why is his order so important to Mr. Lapham and Johnny?

Johnny reacts like John Hancock was royalty because at the time Hancock was the richest man in the area. Johnny and Mr. Lapham wanted to nail this order because if John Hancock liked the work that Johnny did then Mr. Hancock would come more often. If John Hancock comes more to the shop, then they would get paid a large sum of money from them.
Besides having a lot of money, how else is John Hancock influential?
